Thirty years later, the rematch is finally a real basketball game.
When the Tune Squad and Monstars meet Dec. 19 at ACME Arena, the anniversary packaging will be impossible to miss. So will the 1996 references. But the matchup no longer needs nostalgia to carry it.
The Tune Squad won the Toon Basketball League championship in 2024. The rebuilt Monstars won it in 2025. They have not played an official game against each other since the Tune Squad’s 78–77 win three decades ago.
That makes this less a reunion than a collision of two very different basketball histories that finally ended up in the same place.
THE REMATCH TOOK 30 YEARS TO BECOME POSSIBLE
The 1996 Tune Squad was assembled for one game. The TBL had already been operating since 1978, but Bugs Bunny’s emergency roster existed outside league competition: Michael Jordan, Lola Bunny and a collection of Tunes trying to stop five aliens who had stolen the abilities of NBA players.
They won. The stolen talent was returned. The lineup scattered.
For the next 25 years, “Tune Squad” was remembered as a team without functioning like one.
The 2021 reunion against the Goon Squad changed that. LeBron James joined Bugs, Lola and the larger Looney Tunes ensemble for another emergency game, and the response was strong enough to turn a familiar name into a business plan.
By 2022, the Tune Squad had joined the TBL as a player-owned franchise.
FROM REUNION TO CONTENDER
The first professional roster was Bugs Bunny, Lola Bunny, Gossamer, Road Runner and Speedy Gonzales. The club went 10–8, beat the Solvang CobbleCloggers 107–101 for its first home win at ACME Arena and reached the postseason before losing to the Metropolis Generals in the semifinals.
Bugs retired from playing after the season, keeping founder equity and special legacy voting rights while leaving the active roster behind.
The next step came quickly.
Lola became captain in 2023, Buster Bunny became the first new permanent signing of the professional era and the Tune Squad improved to 17–9. A 121–119 overtime win at Dimmsdale — “The Dimmadome Game” — became the season’s signature result, but Metropolis won the championship series 3–2.
Road Runner stepped away after the season. Michelangelo took the open roster spot in 2024.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP THAT CHANGED THE EXPECTATIONS
That move helped produce the best season in franchise history.
The Tune Squad went 20–6 in 2024, beat the Springfield Excitement in the semifinals and finally got past Metropolis, the opponent that had ended each of its first two playoff runs. A 114–103 win at ACME Arena closed out a 3–1 championship series and delivered the Tune Squad’s first TBL title.
The December rematch is not just a 1996 callback anymore. It is a meeting between the TBL’s 2024 and 2025 champions.
The title also arrived just as the other half of the rivalry was being rebuilt. Max Holdings announced that the Monstars would return to professional basketball in 2025, entering the TBL in the opposite conference.
2025 CONNECTED THE TEAMS WITHOUT MATCHING THEM UP
The Tune Squad changed again. Speedy Gonzales left the active roster to focus on FedMex. Sonic arrived as the marquee signing, joining Lola, Gossamer, Buster and Michelangelo in the five-player group that still starts today.
The defending champions finished 16–10, but Solvang ended the repeat bid with a 110–108 postseason win.
Then Solvang kept going.
The CobbleCloggers reached the championship series, where the newly revived Monstars were waiting. In their first TBL season under Max Holdings, the Monstars went 23–3 and beat Solvang 3–1 for the title.
The Tune Squad never got its shot at them.
That is part of what gives the anniversary game weight now. The team that eliminated the Tune Squad in 2025 was the same team the Monstars beat for the championship. December is the first chance to compare the two champions directly.
THE MONSTARS ARE NOT RUNNING IT BACK THE OLD WAY
The modern Monstars use the old name, but not the old operation. Max Holdings — the family-controlled company led by Montana Max — backs the franchise, and several original Nerdlucks remain involved with the organization.
The biggest difference is also the most obvious one: this version does not use stolen NBA talent.
The Monstars are now a conventional professional team with a dominant first season on their résumé. What they kept from 1996 was the identity — and the unresolved matchup.
THE CURRENT TUNE SQUAD HAS MOMENTUM OF ITS OWN
For the first time in the professional era, the Tune Squad entered 2026 with its starting five intact from the previous season.
Lola remains captain and the club’s largest active-player shareholder. Gossamer gives the lineup its size. Buster has grown from the first post-2022 signing into a permanent starter. Michelangelo is in his third season with the club. Sonic, now in year two, gives the offense a different kind of transition speed.
The group also has a recent road result to point to. Earlier this year, the Tune Squad went to The Greenhouse for a sanctioned crossover against the Vineland Thorns and won 118–116 under hybrid basketball/Roarball rules.
The exhibition does not decide anything about December, but it gave the current five another close-game win in an unfamiliar environment — exactly the kind of result a team wants before the biggest event on its calendar.
WHY DECEMBER 19 MATTERS
The 30th Anniversary Game is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 19 at ACME Arena, with tipoff at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
CBS will carry the national telecast. Nickelodeon will present a family-focused alternate broadcast, and Paramount+ will stream the CBS feed live.
There will be throwback material. There will be arguments about 1996. There will probably be at least one moment designed for people who have not thought about Moron Mountain in years.
But the basketball case for the game is straightforward.
The Tune Squad is two years removed from a championship, brings back the same starting five and has spent 2026 building continuity. The Monstars are the reigning TBL champions after a 23–3 debut season. One franchise has spent four years becoming permanent. The other spent one year becoming dominant.
For 30 years, the rivalry existed almost entirely because of one game.
On Dec. 19, it finally gets a second one.
